Why do I paint pets?
My first loves in this life were cats and drawing. The two went together so perfectly, too - for years I drew pretty much nothing but cats, but times eventually changed and I moved towards fantasy and spiritual/visionary themes in my work. As an adult, I've suffered from "art blocks." The joy was taken out of art after so much striving for perfection, to be a "good artist" and excessively defining myself as an artist while feeling much anxiety around the creative process. In 2019, I started painting pets, in part to get back in touch with the subject that most captivated me as a kid. Like many lifelong artists, childhood was when I was the most "in the flow" with my creativity. Adopting a rescue dog in late 2020 brought me into the world of dogs, and painting pets felt like a very natural thing to do. It's through my love of animals and my own dog that I connect to the love in the hearts of all pet owners. The very special connection we have to them and the place they hold in our lives can never be replaced or filled with anything else. I aspire to create portraits that reflect this feeling.
